Breaking News Aidan Lang lg 918
AIDAN LANG, who has served as Seattle Opera’s general director since 2014, was named today as the next general director of Welsh National Opera and will leave the Washington company at the conclusion of the current season to take the reins in Cardiff.
“Coming to Seattle Opera was one of the greatest honors of my life,” Lang said in a statement issued today. “This company is known around the world for its enthusiastic and generous opera community, warmth, and welcoming atmosphere for artists, and the audiences’ desire to experience a mix of operas and styles. Welsh National Opera is where my career in opera began. It is my artistic home, and the only other company for which I would consider departing Seattle. In the meantime, I’m looking forward to spending the next ten months here.”
Seattle Opera also announced today that its board of trustees will convene a search committee to identify the company’s next leader.
Born in Britain, Lang served as general director of New Zealand Opera from 2006 to 2013, and previously held artistic and administrative positions at Buxton Festival, Glyndebourne's Festival, Welsh National Opera and Netherlands's Opera Zuid while maintaining an international career as a freelance director.
Appointed to Seattle Opera in 2013, Lang became just the third general director in the company’s history. During his tenure Lang has instigated co-productions with companies including Washington National Opera, San Francisco Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Glimmerglass Festival, Opera Philadelphia, Opera Queensland and New Zealand Opera; launched chamber opera series; expanded Seattle Opera’s youth and adult education programs; and has overseen the $60 million development efforts for the company’s new administrative and rehearsal space at Seattle Center, which is slated to open in December. Seattle Opera has also witnessed a growth in mainstage audiences from 67,000 during the 2014-15 season to 85,000 last season. Likewise, Seattle Opera reports that the proportion of millennials attending its performances has nearly quadrupled during the same period.
Welsh National Opera is the UK’s largest touring opera company and receives funding from the Arts Councils of Wales and England to provide large-scale opera performances across Wales and major centers in England. According to WNO, Lang will officially assume his position in July 2019, and intends to relocate to Wales full time with his wife, the singer and director Linda Kitchen, and their daughter, Eleanor
